The Foundation Nominating and Governance Committee is responsible for interviewing candidates and compiling the slate for the Foundation Board of Directors. It does not appoint volunteers to any other committees of the Foundation.

GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR CANDIDATES

The Nominating Committee of the USTA Foundation Incorporated (“Foundation”) invites you to submit an application for the USTA Foundation Board of Directors.
 
The term of service is for three (3) years, beginning in January of 2021 and ending in December of 2023, or when a successor is elected. These are volunteer positions.
 
The application is currently closed. 
 
APPLICATION
All applications will be submitted electronically. The application is currently closed. At least two letters of recommendation must be submitted in support of your application, and are only accepted via email to USTAFoundationNomination@usta.com. If you are an existing USTA Foundation Board Member, you may re-submit previously submitted letters of recommendation to USTAFoundationNomination@usta.com.
 
Should you choose not to complete the form online, you are welcome to download the form to complete. The application, written or typed answers to application questions, and letters of recommendations will only be accepted via email submitted to USTAFoundationNomination@usta.com.
 
Mailed applications and letter(s) of recommendation will not be accepted. 
 
APPLICATION REVIEW AND INTERVIEWS
All applications will be thoroughly reviewed by the Nominating and Governance Committee or its designee. Only completed packages will be considered. A completed package consists of: an application filled out and signed in its entirety and a minimum of two letters of recommendation, and completed Conflict of Interest Disclosure Form (COID).  If you are a current serving USTA Foundation Board or USTA Foundation Advisory Board Member, the submitted 2020 COID form may be utilized. All applicants must be Safe Play compliant at the time of application submission. 

Following a review of applications, the Nominating and Governance Committee or its designee will extend interview invitations to a select group of candidates.
 
 
NOTIFICATION DATE
Applicants selected for the 2021-2023 term for the USTA Foundation Board of Directors will be notified no later than December 8, 2020 as to the status of their candidacy. Nominees selected for the slate will be notified by phone by a member of the Nominating and Governance Committee as soon as possible following December 8, 2020. 
 
CHARACTERISTICS OF SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATES
Nominating and Governance Committee decisions are based on many factors. The Nominating and Governance Committee will be looking for Board Members who can shape the future of the Foundation. Our Board selection process is designed to create a team that, in combination, possesses the full complement of skills necessary to fulfill the Foundation’s mission, strategic priorities and goals. The responsibilities of the USTA Foundation Board of Directors includes, but are not limited to:

  • Shaping the future of the Foundation with long-term strategic thinking;
  • Assessing the performance of the Executive Director;
  • Meeting the Board Give and Get Policy of $15,000; 
  • Creating a set of long-term financial goals;
  • Establishing explicit governing policies; and 
  • Serving as the legitimate link between Foundation staff and volunteers. 

 
The Nominating and Governance Committee will review all candidates against the following criteria:

  • Passion, belief and support of the mission of the USTA Foundation;
  • Proven leadership ability; 
  • Previous experience serving on boards (either for-profit or nonprofit); 
  • Diversity, including but not limited to gender, ethnicity, race, age, disabilities and geography; 
  • Experience with complex organizations; 
  • Current or prior chief executive officer, chief operating officer, or chief financial officer level experience (either for-profit or nonprofit); 
  • Knowledge and experience regarding nonprofit and volunteer organizations (not limited to Foundation experience); 
  • Specific skills such as finance, audit, legal, information technology, diversity awareness, fund raising, marketing, leadership development; 
  • Ability to commit significant time and resources to the Board;
  • A passion for the sport of tennis: and,
  • Community experience.

 
TIME COMMITMENT FOR BOARD OF DIRECTORS AND ADVISORY BOARD MEMBERS
 
Serving as a Foundation Board Member requires a significant time commitment, typically between 40-55 days per year, with officers investing even more time. The time required to serve on the Foundation Board includes the length of the Annual and Semiannual meetings each year, plus additional time between those meetings to attend to Board matters, committee business, and specific subcommittee assignments.
 
VERIFICATION OF APPLICATION DATA
The Nominating and Governance Committee or its designee may potentially seek feedback from people familiar with an applicant's performance in the roles listed on the application.
