The USTA Foundation is proud to announce a new scholarship opportunity in support of young tennis players: the Novo Nordisk Donnelly Scholarship.

First established by Billie Jean King in 1998 and associated with the USTA Foundation for the first time in 2021, the Novo Nordisk Donnelly Scholarship is named after two collegiate tennis champions, Diane Donnelly Stone and Tracey Donnelly Maltby, sisters who have lived with diabetes since childhood. Stone, an All-American and NCAA doubles champion at Northwestern University, partnered former USTA president Katrina Adams to win the 1987 national title, and Maltby was an All-Big Ten honoree at the University of Iowa.

King lauded the association as "a big step towards expanding the reach of this important program and will continue to facilitate our efforts to provide scholarships to students who play tennis and live with diabetes."

The 2021 program will grant a total of $60,000 in scholarships, including two one-time $10,000 national scholarships and eight $5,000 regional scholarships, and is supported by Novo Nordisk, a global healthcare company which has been making innovative medicines to help people with diabetes lead longer, healthier lives for nearly a century.

Applications for the 2021 Novo Nordisk Donnelly Scholarship are currently being accepted and must be received by May 1, 2021. In addition, the applicant must provide two letters of recommendation, and a short essay on how tennis and diabetes have impacted them. Both high school students and those currently enrolled in college are eligible to apply.

The scholarship funds are to be used for education, educational materials, and other related expenses at the college or university the student selects.
